Pharmaceutical Grade
Fish Oil
To produce pharmaceutical grade fish oil, advanced chemical
engineering is used to remove most of the saturated fat by
fractional distillation and removal of harmful chemicals like
PCBs. With such innovations, new type of fish oil with higher
amount of
long-chain omega-3 fatty acids
was created, free from unwanted by-products like mercury and
chemical contaminants or harmful fatty acids.
Fish oil concentrates undergo various processes to ensure that
fatty acids are maximized. A regular fish oil normally contains
about 30% of omega-3, of which 18% EPA and 12% DHA. For a
high-concentrated fish oil, its omega-3 content ranges from 30%
to as high as 95%.
The benefits of fish
oil is numerous. To reap its full benefit,
the best type of fish oil is fish oil concentrate,
due to its higher content of EPA and DHA, it is
usually used for therapeutic purposes. It may be difficult
to take in the required amount of omega-3 fatty acids from
fish source alone daily. Hence fish oil concentrate is a
good source of supplement when higher doses of EPA and DHA
is required.
Omega-3 fish oil
concentrates will cost more due
to the technology and processes used in order to get the oils
out of the fish to produce the percentage level of omega 3
present.
Pharmaceutical grade fish oil is on top of
the list. Fish oil with a “pharmaceutical grade”
indicates an assurance of getting omega 3 fatty acids from a fish of good
quality and the product is free from lipid peroxides, heavy
metals, environmental contaminants and other harmful
compounds.

How do we
determine if a fish oil is of pharmaceutical
grade?
1.
Natural Vitamin E is being used as a
preservative for the fish
oils.
2.
It must contain minimum of 50% of
concentration of omega
3 fatty
acids.
3.
It has ratio of less than .04 of
AA/EPA.
4.
It has less than 10 pbb for PCBs/gram
oil.
5.
The manufacturer has a certified good
manufacturing practices facility in relation to
pharmaceutical products.

A special note: Although cod liver oil may
be the least expensive form of fish oil, but it tends to be
even less pure than regular grade fish oil, and it also
contains high levels of vitamin A, which can be toxic in high
dosages.
