Comparing Fish Oil Flax
Seed
If you are familiar about the world of
health supplements, then you are certainly aware of the
ongoing debate about the merits of fish oil flax seed. At
first glance, both are producers of Omega-3 fatty acids,
a family of fatty acids that are all beneficial for the
body. Though they have the same essential fatty acids,
the debate still go on as to which of them, fish oil flax
seed, is more beneficial to the
body.
The fact is, fish oil and flax seed do both
contain omega 3 fatty acids. However, it is also a fact that
each of them carries a different fatty acid. Omega 3 is a
family of fatty acids, among which are the acids EPA, DHA
and ALA. Each has different benefits and effects to the
body, thus sparking the debate on which has the most
advantages to a person’s health. Thus, in one way, flax
seed can be more advantageous as compared to fish oil but
the same is also true in other cases.
Take heart conditions, for example. Fish
oil is better off in this situation because in order to
maintain the heart’s health, the body needs to have EPA
and DHA in the bloodstream.
These two are converted through
synthesizing ALA. Unfortunately, elderly people are no
longer in the condition to convert ALA efficiently into
the ideal amounts of EPA and DHA. These people happen to
be the ones that need their heart in optimal health, so
flax seed is not ideal for them because it has ALA and
not EPA, from which DHA can simply be converted. In this
case, fish oil is more ideal than flax seed for elderly
persons to take.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for
the brain. So, if you take the brain into consideration,
fish oil still wins over fish oil flax seed in the
debate. That is because EPA and DHA are very important to
the brain, and when ALA is consumed it is no longer
converted or is converted only in amounts that are not
enough to nourish the brain.
